Long Distance? Roaming? Say Whaaa?

There are LOTS of different possibilities for what you could be doing and where. This chart breaks them all down and shows if you'll be charged and how much.

Keep in mind that all these following scenarios are our basic rates. If you've got a Long Distance plan or unlimited texting, then your charges would be different.

I am in my local calling area and I am:

Making a call to my local area:

  • Calls are included in your anytime minutes or unlimited evenings and weekends. If you go over your anytime minutes, additional local calls are 35¢/minute. Texts are 15¢/each without a text add-on. Data is 5¢/KB without a data plan or mobile web browser add-on.

Making a long distance call inside Canada or to the US:

  • 35¢/minute LD charge, texts are 15¢/each without a text add-on.

Making a long distance call to a country outside Canada or the US:

  • International LD rates vary by country.
  • International texts are 25¢/each.

Heads-up: When you're inside your local calling area, receiving calls and texts from anywhere else while you’re there.

I am outside my local calling area but am still inside Canada and I am:

Making a call inside the local calling area I'm visiting:

  • This is a local call, so you'd be charged regular airtime and texts are 15¢/each.

Making a call back to my local calling area:

  • 35¢/minute LD charge, texts are 15¢/each, data is 5¢/KB.

Making a call anywhere else in Canada or to the US:

  • 35¢/minute LD charge, texts are 15¢/each.

Heads-up: When you're outside your local calling area but still inside Canada, it's 35¢/minute to receive a call from anywhere (including the city you're visiting) and receiving texts is no charge.

I am in the US (so I'm roaming now) and I am:

Making a call back to Canada:

  • Calls are $1.45/minute (95¢/minute roaming charge 50¢/minute LD charge)
  • Texts are 60¢/each, and data is 5¢/KB if you don't have a smartphone, $6/MB if you have a smartphone, and 3$/MB on a mobile internet stick.

Making a call inside the local calling area I'm visiting:

  • 95¢/minute roaming charge, texts are 60¢/each.

Making a LD call to another city in the US:

  • Calls are $1.45/minute (95¢/minute roaming charge 50¢/minute LD charge). Texts are 60¢/each.

Making a call to an international country that's not Canada:

  • For these calls there's a 95¢/minute roaming charge plus any International Long Distance charges and texts are 60¢/each.

Heads-up: When you're in the US, receiving calls from anywhere is $1.45/minute (that's a 95¢/minute roaming charge 50¢/minute LD charge) and receiving texts is free.

I am roaming internationally outside the US:
  • When you're making any calls while you're outside of Canada and the US the rates all depend on which country you're calling from. Check out our international calling rates to see the charges.
  • Sending texts is 60¢/each and data is 5¢/KB on all phones
  • Receiving texts is free.

Good to Know:

The International Long Distance saver is only available to members on a myPlan, myPair or Smartphone Combo Plan, who hooked up their phone after January 29, 2010, or already had their service move.

The International Long Distance Saver doesn’t apply to calls made to Canada or the US. Making a long distance call to Canada or to the US is 35cents/minute.

This stuff can get complicated sometimes. So here's the deal:

Long Distance

This is when you're in Canada on the Virgin Mobile network. You could be inside your local calling area and calling someone far away, or visiting another city in Canada and calling home or anywhere else while you're there.

Heads-up! If you’re travelling outside of North America, give Care a shout at 1.888.999.2321 to get international roaming hooked up on your phone.

Roaming

This is whenever you leave Canada and are "roaming" on one of our partner company's mobile network to use your phone.

Good to Know: Roaming is only available for Members on a myPlan monthly plan.
